Scheduled
OSF will be unavailable from Friday, October 16th at 9:00 am EDT through Monday, October 19th at 9:00 am EDT for a planned Cloud infrastructure migration. Specifically, we will be moving OSF’s Cloud Infrastructure from Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
During this time, all services of the OSF platform will be inaccessible via both the website and API. Please plan to complete any time-sensitive work before the downtime begins.
About the migration
As we announced in August, COS is evolving OSF to focus on the capabilities that are most central to its future: supporting study planning and preregistration, connecting research outputs across the lifecycle, and connecting outcomes shared in preprints and papers.
This cloud migration is part of that broader transition. A more focused OSF gives us an opportunity to simplify and modernize the infrastructure that supports it, improving its operational sustainability while reducing the recurring cost of running the platform. Moving from GCP to OCI is an important step toward that goal.
The migration will also give us an opportunity to strengthen the underlying infrastructure and create a more stable, efficient foundation for OSF as its role in the research ecosystem evolves.
What should I do before the migration?
Please complete any time-sensitive work before the downtime begins. In particular, we recommend saving any in-progress wiki edits and registration drafts before OSF becomes unavailable, as drafts are not guaranteed to autosave or carry over automatically.
Existing security and privacy protections will remain in place, with no change to how COS uses personal information or to the regional file-storage options available. And your prior file storage locations and default settings will be retained through the cloud migration.
If the migration work is completed before the end of the scheduled downtime, OSF services will be restored at that time. Updates during the downtime will be posted at https://status.cos.io/. If you have questions, please contact support@osf.io.
We recognize that an outage of up to three days is disruptive, and we appreciate your patience as we work to keep the downtime as short as possible while making this investment in a more sustainable foundation for OSF.
